There’s nothing like the feeling of cracking open a nice, cold drink on a hot summer day. Perhaps you’re at the cottage, a picnic, or even at a friend’s place for a weekend barbecue. The sun is shining, the vibes are high, and you’re looking for something refreshing to quench your thirst. Maybe you even bring some edibles along to make the barbecue taste just a little better.
If you have a weekend like this coming up, let’s save you the hassle of stopping all over town to grab these essentials. Instead, we want to introduce you to a game-changer. An edible that will not only get you ready for that delicious barbecue, but will also keep you nice and hydrated for that scorching, summer heat. Welcome to the era of cannabis infused beverages.
When you hear the word edibles, the first thing that likely comes to mind is a tasty batch of chocolates or brownies. However, edibles come in a variety of products. From the beloved chocolates and brownies, to cookies, gummies, and yes, even beverages.
Edibles, including cannabis infused beverages are still rather new on the market. Although flower was legalized in 2018, edibles didn’t receive the okay in Canada until October 2019. With production time and other regulations, they didn’t really start appearing on shelves until early 2020. So, although that may seem like a decade ago for some of us, cannabis drinks are still brand new for a lot of people. Whether you’re ahead of the times and have had the chance to try one, or it’s something completely new to you, keep on reading to learn a little more about them.
What are they?
Cannabis infused beverages come in many different flavours and strengths. If you’re looking for a nice, buzzing high, there are options for THC dominant beverages that go up to 10mg a can. If you’re looking for something a little more chill, that can help relieve some of the day’s stress, there are options for CBD dominant beverages with a less stringent cap on potency (at High Tea, we carry drinks that contain 30mg+ of CBD). If you’re looking for the best of both worlds, there are options for 1:1 beverages that carry an even ratio of both THC and CBD.
Now, you’re probably wondering how well it works, and importantly, tastes. To start off, you begin to feel the effects much sooner than a typical edible. While a piece of chocolate could take around 30 minutes to a couple hours to kick in, these drinks typically hit within 30 minutes, and up to an hour at max. Additionally, for a product that needed some way of getting cannabis oils infused into water (because oil and water don’t naturally mix… science!), companies have done quite an impressive job at ensuring you’re not just drinking liquid weed. This process is known as nanoemulsion, which is essentially the act of breaking down oil particles small enough to blend with the water, while leaving out any oily texture. As for the taste, the flavours are typically based on the terpenes of the particular flower being used, so strains, for example, with a more citrusy vibe make for some tasty lemon sparkling water.
What are they good for?
In terms of effects, you can expect a much calmer high than a typical edible. These drinks are more like a bottle of beer, than a shot of tequila. In other words, one of these drinks should keep you nicely on par with everyone else sipping brews and seltzers by the campfire.
This is where you’ll find cannabis drinks the most satisfying. On those summer nights, with some good pals, watching the big game or sitting by a fire at the cottage. Just enough to help make your already fun evening a little better. Not to mention they’re low calorie beverages! 😉
